About Brian Bernhardt

More than structures.

Brian Bernhardt is a Cape Town project architect who specialises in sustainable architecture, with 30 years of experience across South Africa's climates and regions.

A legacy in concrete, timber and light.

I have always seen buildings as more than structures; they are a concrete legacy for the generations that succeed us.

Designing and building timeless structures is made possible at the intersection of creativity and science. Throughout my 30 years as a practising project architect, I have applied and harnessed this mindset. As a result, I have worked on a broad range of buildings across varying climates and regions in South Africa.

In an age where reducing our carbon footprint and preserving nature have become essential, I specialise in sustainable architecture.

My methods include a range of construction techniques, along with appropriate technological solutions, bringing to life my clients' ideals and visions in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Practising for some of the most prestigious architectural firms in South Africa afforded me the opportunity to work with international and local clients from the corporate, NGO and private sectors. Since 2012, I have primarily worked on projects on the Atlantic Seaboard, managing new-build residences and extensive alterations and additions for some of South Africa's most distinctive residential properties.

Mission

Build to the highest standard achievable, in harmony with the land.

No matter how complex the build or alteration, the aim is the same: construction completed to the highest standard, meeting each client's specific needs and exceeding their expectations.

That means a working environment where the contractor and professional team collaborate well, seamless project management through construction, and buildings that cost less to run and ask less of the environment for decades.

What makes Brian different: design, delivery and building science without handoffs.

Design and delivery together

Brian designs the building and administers its construction as Principal Agent, so the intent on the drawings is the building you move into.

Proven on demanding sites

More than a decade of new builds and major alterations on the Atlantic Seaboard: steep slopes, strict council requirements, and exposure to wind and salt.

Sustainability that pays back

Energy-efficiency compliance is the baseline. The goal is a lower carbon footprint and lower monthly running costs over the building's whole life.

Let's talk about what you want to build.
